It may have been a long since you last touched your sewing machine or maybe you have never used a sewing machine at all, this five week course will provide you with what you need to begin your sewing journey. Sewing can be overwhelming with all of the features and moving parts, but it does not have to be.

On this course we will go over all necessary basics to make sure you are comfortable with your sewing machine. We will cover everything a beginner needs to know that will leave you confident to take the next step towards other classes. Several of the classes build on each other and can help you get more familiar with techniques and gain skills of all kinds.

We will go over aspects of a domestic machine and its functionality.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

Week 1: Understand the Sewing Machine

Understanding how to use the machine and which stitches to use for what. Practising sewing in straight lines, corners and curves and general machine usage such as winding a bobbin and changing the machine needle.

Week 4: Lined Tote Bag with button closure

Your fourth week will show you how to make a lined tote bag, building on the skills you’ve learnt so far, plus adding in new ones such as lining, turning tubes of fabric and making a machined button hole.

Week 5: Catch up Session / Independent Project

By your final week you'll be ready to move onto a project of your choice or have the opportunity to catch up on any projects that are still on the go.

MATERIALS

No tools for the first session*. When starting a new endeavor for the first time, even selecting basic supplies can be overwhelming, so in the first session we will discuss what you need in your sewing kit.

In week 2 you will need to bring ½ Meter (20”) length of your choice of cotton fabric for the cushion cover, matching thread and a 40cm x 40cm (16x16 inches) Cushion inner/pad. Please note that if you use a directional print you may need to purchase more than half a metre. We will discuss this in week 1.
